Inexpensive Leg + Toe Warmers

Necessity may be the mother of invention. For me, this week's necessity has given me the opportunity to funnel my creativity somewhere I hadn't planned... C'est la vie.

My daughter broke her leg... on Thanksgiving Day. And while she's been absolutely ecstatic about the idea of having a portable canvas, I've been thinking about how to care for her changing needs. I mean, we are approaching December and the poor girl has one leg covered with toes exposed and the other leg is left uncovered.

Handprint Turkey Puppets

My kids have always loved making handprint turkeys, so we absolutely had to do this project.

Watercolor Leaves

When I look outside, we still have a little bit of fall color. I know it will come to an end soon, however, and the cold, bare branches will become nearly transparent next to the evergreen triangles that surround us. For now, we'll try to squeeze in the last of our fall projects before the season ends.

Fall Trees Paper Collage

So my kids weren't as impressed with this project, but at least they tried it. I think the placement of the tiny pieces of paper was too tedious. Or maybe it was a little too similar to the tissue paper pumpkin project. I'll have to do a little bit better with my project planning for them.

Tablecloth Redesign

My family room has a problem: it has way too much brown. Not that there's anything wrong with brown, but when almost every piece of furniture in a room is the same chocolaty shade, the room can be a little boring. But I never intended the room to end up this way. My husband and I bought the couch, and when we moved into our home, we didn't have enough furniture (or the funds) to fill our home. But we have a generous family who gave us many of their unwanted used furniture pieces so that we could have places to sit and eat and sleep. Here we are three years later and not much has changed. So I decided to begin by making a table runner for the library table behind the couch in an effort to break up the brown.

Leaf Rubbing Garland

Leaf rubbings are a great way to preserve the colors of the season. Joining the rubbings together to make a garland creates a simple and colorful decoration that will last throughout all of your Fall celebrations.

Tissue Paper Pumpkins

I've been meaning to give my kids an art lesson each week since our school system doesn't have a very good art program. As we were close to entering the last month of Fall, I realized I hadn't done many projects in celebration of the season with my kids yet. So I've decided to try to do a minimum of one art project a week with my kids. This was the first project we did right after Halloween.

Clothing Journal Recap

On the first day of September, I began a personal challenge to wear a different outfit each day for the entire month. Two months later and sixty-three outfits later, I finally decided to end my challenge. I could have gone on much longer, but I decided I had successfully built some good, creative clothing habits during the two month period and that it was time to use what I had learned from the exercise and build off of it.

I actually don't have that much clothing and all of my outfits were extremely comfortable. I've had a lot of compliments, and people seem to think that I spend a lot of time on myself -- which I don't. And suddenly I feel so much better about myself. Sometimes if I don't feel that great, but if I feel like I look good, then my attitude for the day changes. It's so simple, really. Spend an extra five minutes in the morning and suddenly everyone treats me differently... and then I treat me differently.

Some friends have asked some questions about how I achieve my look every day and about how I've built my wardrobe, and I'll try to blog about these subjects as I think of them!

Pumpkin Party Prize Cards

After our pumpkin carving party, I needed to send prizes to winners of our carving contest. I decided to whip up some quick personalized cards to tuck the prizes into.

Decorating Pumpkins

One easy craft idea my kids enjoyed this Halloween was decorating mini pumpkins. During our pumpkin carving party, I set out a huge bowl filled with mini pumpkins and I also set out bowls of foam stickers, regular stickers, and adhesive googly eyes. I also set out markers and tubes of glitter glue and I let the kids go wild! Because of the glitter glue, the pumpkins took a little bit of time to dry, so I lined a windowsill with strips of tissue paper for the kids to set their completed works to dry. I was impressed by the individuality of all of the pumpkins -- everyone did a fantastic job!

Robot Costume

This year my son wanted to be a robot for Halloween. When he mentioned it, I knew he had some ideas about what he wanted it to look like, so I made sure to sketch a robot I was pretty sure I could make out of boxes just so that we'd be on the same page.

After I was sure it was something he'd like, we started collecting items we thought we could recycle into his costume. We set aside some applesauce containers and bottle tops of various shapes and colors. When I had a couple of boxes for the project, I set to work.

Pumpkin Carving Party

After talking about it for years, we finally got around to having a pumpkin carving party. We had a great time!
