San Diego Zoo

No trip to San Diego is complete without a trip to San Diego Zoo! Because we visited in December, we were fortunate to see a bit of "Jungle Bells," the zoo dressed in a holiday splendor of lights.

But our goal was to see the true stars of the zoo: the animals!

Legoland California

The main reason we came to the San Diego area was to visit LEGOLAND California. We're a family of LEGO lovers, so we were eager to get inside and enjoy this ultimate celebration of all things LEGO!

Legoland Hotel

Our kids love LEGO, so when we found out there was a LEGOLAND Hotel near San Diego, we were immediately interested. How could we, true LEGO fans, not stay there for even just one night?!? How could we possibly pass up the opportunity to do so while our kids are still youngish and still fascinated by the wonderful world of LEGO?

Well, we couldn't! So we took the leap and dove headfirst into the colorful world of LEGOLAND Hotel, and we're so glad we did!

Silver Strand State Beach

We are a beach-loving family! Unfortunately since we live near Seattle, we only get about five months of decent weather to get outside and comfortably enjoy the area's beaches. When we decided to vacation in San Diego, we knew we needed at least one day at the beach. Silver Strand State Beach gave us exactly what we needed!

Etch A Sketch Art

Two years ago my son used his used mini Etch A Sketch to make a picture of Seattle. My daughter decided it was time for her to attempt the feat herself.

She said I should photograph it. And share it on my blog. So here it is.

Golden Gardens Park

I've heard so many good things about Golden Gardens Park for so many years! When I found out the weather was going to be nice this week, I decided I'd take my kids to the beach, and Golden Gardens Park sounded like the perfect place to take them.

Backyard Bounty

My parents have an amazing backyard overflowing with fruits and veggies. This year they allowed me to pick more than my fair share of fruit. But I had so much that I actually had to figure out what to do with it all before the fruit went bad!

Here are some of the transformations made:

EMP Homeschool Day

One of our favorite homeschool opportunities lies at the base of the Space Needle: EMP Museum! What's totally awesome is that they have actual Homeschool Days where we take a workshop and then enjoy the museum at a discounted price.

Homeschool ID Cards

This year, I decided to join the Homeschool Buyers Co-op so we could join other homeschoolers in order to purchase educational programs and aids at a discounted rate. The prices are fantastic, and joining is free, so why not?

One of the freebies I was given upon joining was the ability to print out my own homeschool ID cards complete with photos. After thinking about it for a bit, we decided to name our "school" Two Dog MakerSpace because we have most of our workroom set up in our dining room (aka the dog's room). We make things, we pet the dogs, we make more things... the name just makes sense.

Easy Dog Cupcakes

I can't believe our little dogs already turned one! We've had such a fun time with them that time has absolutely flown by. Ah, the joys of dog ownership!

My daughter insisted we throw a mini dog birthday party, so I dropped by Mud Bay natural pet store to pick up gifts and decided on some baggies of bulk treats and a new, strong-built "Esmeralda Turtle" Fluff & Tuff dog toy.

But I couldn't stop there. Of course I couldn't. I just had to make some Doggie Cupcakes.

I picked up some ready-made cupcakes from a bakery (ours were vanilla and lemon gluten-free, vegan cupcakes from Flying Apron) and I decorated them with items I already had at home.

Time to Do Some Illustrating!

I'm trying my hand at a little more illustration. My paintings take too darn long! So until I feel up to doing more of them, I'm just going to do a few of these instead. I haven't added color yet, but I like it already!

Historic Columbia River Highway Scenic Byway

While camping in Viento State Park, we decided to drive part of the Historic Columbia River Highway Scenic Byway. We traveled the portion of the Byway running between Corbett and Dodson -- about 15 miles. Along the way we were impressed by beautiful architecture and engineering, such as Vista House above, or the bridge at Shepperds Dell below.

All roads and walkways blended into the natural surroundings beautifully. You can see the care that went into building this road a hundred years ago!

Bridal Veil Falls State Park

Along the Historic Columbia River Highway Scenic Byway sits Bridal Veil Falls State Park. It doesn't look like much from the parking area. In fact, if it wasn't for the sign, you might not even know the falls existed.

Multnomah Falls

One stop you need to make if you are staying along the Columbia River Gorge is Multnomah Falls.

There is a lot of old charm here. You can see it in Benson Bridge seen above, or in Multnomah Falls Lodge at the base of the falls, or even in little details like the stone drinking fountain my daughter loved so much.

Oneonta Tunnel and Gorge

Our first stop along the Historic Columbia River Highway Scenic Byway was Oneonta Tunnel.  The tunnel is only for pedestrians now, but it was once a part of the Historic Highway that now rests beside it.

Viento State Park

As a last minute trip, we decided to come down to Oregon for some camping at Viento State Park. The park is old, but beautiful. The campground sits in a beautiful forest of trees that spills out onto the windy shores of the Columbia River. Gorgeous!

I didn't like staying there.

The reason is because the beautiful forest is sandwiched between busy Intersate 84 (which my kids had fun playing under),...

Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail

Just as the name implies, the trail stretches along a portion of what was once the Historic Columbia River Highway. It is still paved and weaves as it follows the contours of the mountain beside it.

Today I felt like scribbling with markers. So I did. And slowly before my eyes something appeared.

It reminds me of a riverbed. Stones smoothed by rushing water. I, too, am being shaped by my environment. Carved and honed by the waters of life.

May the waters be gentle.

Alki Beach Park

Some days, you just feel like hanging out at the beach. But if you are familiar with Washington beaches, then you know that a lot of them in the Puget Sound are rocky. So we decided to go to the first sandy beach that came to my mind: Alki Beach Park in Seattle.

Charcoal Alaska

Thinking of Alaska today. I can still see the clouds hanging like mist over the treetops and the mountains bending over silver waters to see their reflections below.

An amazing memory to carry with me forever!

Juneau Roundup

Well, we loved our trip to Juneau! I miss it already.

Just to be thorough, I wanted to be sure to mention a few other gems we enjoyed on our trip.

- We shared King Crab at Tracy's King Crab Shack. The kids had so much fun tearing into these big crabs! Tip: go early to get the best and freshest selection.

Rainforest Trail

On our last full day in Alaska, we went on a rainy day hike on the Rainforest Trail at the north end of Douglas Island.

Salmon Fishing in Juneau

Before I begin, I'd like to say that my kids are amazing! Why? Because they got up and out of their cozy beds and into the great outdoors at the ungodly hour of 4:30am.

Yes. 4:30am. In Alaska. In the rain.

And what would make them want to come out so early?

Whale Watching with Allen Marine Tours

We went on a Whale Watching & Wildlife Quest through Allen Marine Tours. Whale watching was high on my son's list for our visit to Juneau. He had fuzzy memories of enjoying his tour last time he was in Alaska -- nine years ago. Honestly, I think he just remembers us talking about it!
