San Diego Zoo

No trip to San Diego is complete without a trip to San Diego Zoo! Because we visited in December, we were fortunate to see a bit of "Jungle Bells," the zoo dressed in a holiday splendor of lights.

But our goal was to see the true stars of the zoo: the animals!

We wandered through the park on foot, and ate a picnic lunch in the shade before taking a bus tour around the outside of the park.

We also made sure to ride the Skyfari Aerial Tram which gave us a great view of Balboa Park.

As the sun went down, the zoo lit up for "Jungle Bells" and long lines formed to ride the holiday trolley and to see Santa.

We were okay without that little bit -- as luck would have it, we saw quite a few lights already as we rode the last tour bus of the day. I will say the lights in the old trees were beautiful! Besides the lights, a benefit of staying late at the zoo is that some of the animals are only active at night. My kids were delighted to see the Tazmanian Devils wandering about their enclosure before we left.

The day was sunny and crisp, and the evening brought a winter bite in the wind, so if you visit in Winter, be sure to dress in layers. We left the zoo shivering, but satisfied with our adventure. San Diego Zoo was definitely worth the visit!
