Professional Bull Riders

What's that saying? When in Rome...

When we toured the National Cowboy & Western Museum, we were told that pretty much every weekend there's a rodeo. That Oklahomans love their rodeos. So we decided that since we were in Oklahoma, we should do as the Oklahomans do, and attend PBR, Professional Bull Riders.

National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum

The End of the Trail by James Earle Fraser

We took our homeschool on the road again, this time to Oklahoma City. After asking a few friends what we should see while in the city, one museum popped up again and again, so we made it our first stop: National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum.

Rainbow Roll

Just a year ago my family was traveling around Japan. It was a trip of a lifetime!

Before we even set foot in Japan though, my daughter, who was eight at the time, had decided she wants to move to Japan when she grows up. While we were there, she was in absolute heaven! I'm pretty sure Japanese "kawaii" culture and Harajuku style won her over even more! And ever since we came home, she has been studying the Japanese language, watches anime every chance she gets, and frequently listens to JPop. All of this might just be a phase, or it might not. It doesn't really matter. She's happy, she's passionate about something, and she's learning so much along the way.

So my latest illustration is a tribute to my little girl: she's happiness wrapped in a rainbow; she's the little American girl in Japanese clothes who grows bigger and more colorful every day.

Oh, how I love watching these kids grow!

Rilakkuma Breakfast

My kids really liked the Pac-Man breakfast I created last week, so today I decided to whip up something a little more cute in honor of my daughter's current love of all things Kawaii. When I placed this Rilakkuma (リラックマ) in front of my kids, I heard a resounding "Aww, that's so cute!"

Rilakkuma is made of gluten-free pancakes I mixed together using Namaste Foods Perfect Flour Blend, and topped them with banana slices and melted Enjoy Life Dairy-Free Semi Sweet Chocolate Mini Chips. The small bowl is filled with frozen bananas and strawberries that I ran through my Yonanas. Rilakkuma is known for having some favorite foods and pancakes are one of them. But I included nods to two other favorites as well: grapes, and perched in the bowl of Yonanas, a mini marshmallow (I used Dandies Vegan Mini Vanilla Marshmallows) and toothpick version of dango (団子), or Japanese sweet rice balls I've often seen served on skewers.

What better way to start your day than with a Kawaii breakfast? Give it a try, I'll bet it'll put a smile on your face!

Seattle Art Museum

Our adventure this week: Seattle Art Museum.

Honestly, I didn't know how this would go. The last time I took my kids to SAM, they were pretty small and they totally didn't get it. And I mean totally. As in two whiny children who were stir-crazy to leave and wouldn't let me enjoy a single moment to escape into artistic bliss. So it took me awhile to heal from my failed attempt. A long time. But when I found out the museum had an exhibit featuring some of Impressionism's most celebrated artists passing through, I decided it was time to give it another try. I'm so glad I did! This time, to my utter amazement, my kids were ready to escape into artistic bliss themselves.

Breakfast, Pac-Man Style

We love video games in this house. We play everything from the original "Super Mario Bros." to "Ori and the Blind Forest." The other day, I chuckled to myself a little when my daughter proclaimed that the 80's were the "Golden Age" of gaming. And when I think of games like "Pac-Man," I have to agree.

So today I present my ode to "Pac-Man" in vegan, gluten-free breakfast form. Van's Totally Original Gluten Free Waffles worked well for my Pac-Man. Nature's Path Gorilla Munch Cereal were perfect as little Pac-Dots, while cantaloupe balls replaced the game's Power Pellets. Blinky the Ghost made berry special appearance.

I swear, I could almost hear Pac-Man's "waka waka" sound coming from my kids as they devoured their breakfast.

Ok, maybe not, but we all had fun nevertheless :)
