Pokémon Breakfast

It's Pokémon Day! Today we celebrate the 20th anniversary of Nintendo's first Pokémon video games.

Woo hoo!

For breakfast, we had a Pikachu made from Van's Totally Original Gluten Free Waffles, and decorated them with melted Enjoy Life Dairy-Free Semi Sweet Chocolate Mini Chips and pieces of strawberry. On the side was the symbol for Electric Type Pokémon, a slice of chocolate adorned pineapple. And to drink: a two-toned red berry/banana coconut smoothie.

Happy Pokémon Day!

Decorative Mending

I've been wearing a pair of pants that I love a little too much lately. I honestly don't own many pairs of pants, and I've been cold, so my skirts just haven't cut it. As I was going through my closet to see what other options I had, I noticed a pair of pants just like my favorites hanging in the way back of my closet behind my Summer clothing. Why were they in the back? Because they had holes in them!

Well, time to remedy that situation! I decided it was the perfect opportunity for me to try my hand at some decorative mending!

Legend of Zelda Lunch

We are huge Legend of Zelda fans, so we are celebrating its 30th anniversary today with a special lunch!I have included a grilled cheese Triforce, a tomato Heart Bar, a celery Magic Meter, a spinach Deku Leaf, and for dessert, a jar full of BaKol Strawberry Jel as the perfect Bottle of Red Potion.

We may be geeks, but at least we do it with style!

When the Creativity Dam Breaks

My son's most recent late-night LEGO creation:
a large LEGO Minecraft skeleton.

My husband told my daughter not to stay up too late when he tucked her in last night. You see, in our family we have a problem. No matter what time my kids go to bed, they wake up early. So we try to get our kids to bed pretty early to make sure they get enough hours of sleep. The problem comes when the creativity dam breaks. My kids are a lot like me that way: sometimes the flow of creativity is so strong that we do crazy things like forgetting to eat, randomly waking up in the wee hours of the morning, or staying up way too late.

So here we are. We have a daughter that has piles of paper and pencils next to her bed because although we ask her to go to bed early, she often stays up late drawing or planning stories, and we have a son who gets up without our knowledge in the middle of the night to build with LEGO and then he puts himself back to bed. For the most part, we allow them to do it. As my daughter puts it, she could lie awake, unhappy that she can't sleep, or she can follow the path through blissful creativity. As unschoolers, we try to encourage the latter. But we also encourage sleep. We have to -- we're parents. It's all about balance, and everyone's balance is different.

I hope you all get enough rest. I also hope that some day you know the joy of following the white rabbit of creativity down the rabbit hole. You never know where it will lead!

Oklahoma City - Dinner Time

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Oklahoma City, and while it was mostly because of the stars of our trip, the museums, it was made all the more rich by the supporting actors: the food!

Museum of Osteology

The museum my son wanted to go to most while visiting Oklahoma City was the Museum of Osteology. Who wouldn't want to go to a museum filled with nothing but bones?!?

Okay, I admit it might seem kinda' creepy, but we're a family who gets pretty jazzed about the natural sciences, so this was totally up our alley! I mean, seriously, look at my eleven-year-old son giggling next to this whale skull at the museum entrance.
